IPL 2026: RCB vs LSG - A Steep Ask for the Giants

Can the Lucknow Super Giants stop the RCB powerhouse?

IPL 2026: RCB vs LSG

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru take on the Lucknow Super Giants in match 23 of the Indian Premier League. One team, that has smashed attacks to smithereens and one that is struggling to find its step. This is the beauty of the IPL. No team peaks early and no team is behind for too long. The balance of the team (s) plays an integral part but in the world's best T20 tournament, an inspiring spell or an explosive innings can turn things around pretty quickly. Royal Challengers Bengaluru have emerged as the most dangerous batting unit of IPL 2026 so far. Their top six boasts a run-rate of 11.1, the best in the league so far, the best average (45.2), and the quickest boundary frequency, striking one every 3.6 balls, better than any other team in the league.

In stark contrast, their opponents on Wednesday, Lucknow Super Giants, sit at the opposite end of the spectrum. Their top order has struggled, managing a run-rate of 7.6 and an average of 20.6, while finding the boundary only once every 5.6 balls. While RCB have comfortably crossed the 200-run mark in all four of their innings, LSG’s highest total so far stands at 182.

While Royal Challengers Bengaluru have dominated with the bat, their bowling has been a concern. They currently rank eighth in economy rate this season, conceding runs at 10.62 per over. In contrast, Lucknow Super Giants have been outstanding with the ball, leading the charts with an economy of 8.5. Remarkably, they are yet to concede a 200-plus total in a tournament where such scores have become routine. That makes LSG a significant hurdle for RCB, who are chasing a record-equalling streak of five consecutive 200-plus totals.

And who can forget the dramatic history the two sides share. In 2023, Harshal Patel missed a crucial run-out at the non-striker’s end off the final ball, allowing LSG to clinch a one-wicket win in chaotic scenes at the Chinnaswamy. Weeks later, tensions escalated in Lucknow, with Virat Kohli and LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir involved in a fiery on-field exchange.

PITCH AND CONDITIONS

The average winning total at the Chinnaswamy Stadium is 185. However, in the last two games at the venue, teams have managed to breach 200. RCB posted 250 at the venue against the Chennai Super Kings and chased down 201 at a canter against the SunRisers. How can any team stop RCB at their home turf?

56% of the matches have been won by teams batting second and that is likely to be the trend in Wednesday's fixture as well. Chinnaswamy is a six hitting ground. It averages 16 sixes/game since 2019. With the power-hitting ability the RCB unit has, the number is certain to go up in IPL 2026.

KEY PLAYERS

RAJAT PATIDAR

Rajat Patidar is enjoying the form of his life while leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He has slipped effortlessly into the captaincy role and currently sits fourth in the Orange Cap standings, with 195 runs from just four matches.

In his latest outing against Mumbai Indians on April 12, he produced a crucial half-century, maintaining an outstanding average. Striking at a blistering rate of around 254.84 in the earlier games, he has emerged as one of the most dangerous captain-batters in the league. With the short boundaries at the Chinnaswamy, he’ll be looking to maximize his impact once again. AYUSH BADONI Ayush Badoni recently became only the third batter to reach 1,000 runs for Lucknow Super Giants, joining KL Rahul and Nicholas Pooran. His standout knock this season came against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on April 9, where his 54 off 34 balls guided LSG through a high-pressure chase.

Although he followed it up with a quieter outing, 9 off 11 against Gujarat Titans, Badoni continues to be an energetic presence in the middle order. Averaging 18.75 this season, he still brings value with a career strike-rate of around 138, underlining his role as LSG’s go-to finisher in the closing overs.

TEAM NEWS & PROBABLE XIs

Kohli missed the match against the Mumbai Indians at Wankhede on Sunday due to a mild ankle strain. However, he returned to the nets and completed running tests during RCB’s only training session before Wednesday’s game, easing any concerns about his fitness.

Pacer Rasikh Dar has also recovered from cramps and is ready to play, while Josh Hazlewood was notably absent from the training session. RCB: Virat Kohli, Phil Salt, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar (c), Tim David, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Romario Shepherd, Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jacob Duffy, Suyash Sharma

LSG pacer Mohsin Khan has featured in just one game this season and remains a doubt for Wednesday’s clash. He is scheduled for a fitness test, though LSG’s global director Tom Moody expects it to be a routine check. Meanwhile, Mayank has steadily increased his bowling workload and is match-ready. If included in the XI, he could come in for Avesh Khan, who has conceded runs at an economy rate of 10.4 across four games so far. LSG: Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, Rishabh Pant (c & wk), Ayush Badoni, Nicholas Pooran, Abdul Samad, Mukul Choudhary, Mohammed Shami, Digvesh Rathi, Avesh Khan/Mayank Yadav, Prince Yadav
