IPL 2026: CSK vs KKR - Bottom of the Table Clash

KKR are yet to get of the mark. Can they bag the all important two points today?

IPL 2026: CSK vs KKR - Match Preview

Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders share a rich rivalry, having met in two IPL finals and a Champions League T20 final. Both are among the rare teams with multiple IPL titles. Yet, this time, the stakes are very different—they face off battling to escape the bottom of the table, at risk of falling behind more dynamic sides. CSK have managed just one win in four games, while KKR narrowly avoided a winless start after rain intervened in their clash against Punjab Kings.

Unlike traditional teams, IPL franchises aren’t built on geography or grassroots system, they are shaped at the auction table. And in recent seasons, both sides have struggled in that department. KKR’s decision to release Shreyas Iyer and appoint Ajinkya Rahane as captain has raised questions, while CSK let go of Sameer Rizvi, who has already delivered back-to-back match-winning performances this season.

With so much at stake, the loser in Chennai could find themselves in must-win territory for the remainder of the tournament. Backed by the form of Sanju Samson, who has carried his purple patch from the T20 World Cup, CSK appear slightly better placed to stay in contention. KKR, meanwhile, are still searching for their first win and will be eager to turn things around at a venue that once hosted their maiden IPL final triumph.

PITCH AND CONDITIONS The average winning first innings score at the MA Chidambaram Stadium is approximately 180 runs. This score acts as a crucial benchmark for teams batting first on this venue. It suggests a balanced contest between bat and ball, indicating that teams aiming to bat first should target around this total to apply pressure on the opposition. The pitch at this stadium tends to support both spinners and fast bowlers, making it important for the batting side to build steady partnerships and accelerate towards the end of the innings. Unlike many other venues, teams posting a total have gone on to win a majority of games - 53%. CSK landed their first win of the season only a couple of days back while Kolkata are yet to register a win.

KEY PLAYERS

RUTURAJ GAIKWAD

Ruturaj Gaikwad remains both captain and designated opener for Chennai Super Kings, but there are already whispers about how much more impactful Ayush Mhatre has looked. It’s unlikely CSK will look to undermine their skipper, yet they would certainly want Gaikwad to lift his tempo beyond the run-a-ball approach he has shown so far.

Gaikwad in IPL 2026 so far: Inns: 4, Runs: 56, Avg: 14.00, S/R: 103.70

AJINKYA RAHANE

For Kolkata Knight Riders, Ajinkya Rahane has been their second-highest run-scorer, striking at an impressive 155, particularly by KKR’s standards. However, he still doesn’t feature among the 13 fastest-scoring openers this season. Despite his spirited responses to critics, questions around his strike-rate are likely to persist in a format that continues to demand ever-increasing scoring rates. TEAM NEWS & PROBABLE XIIs

With Dewald Brevis slotting in for the previous game, Chennai Super Kings may be closing in on their ideal XI. MS Dhoni remains out of selection contention, while Gurjapneet Singh has done enough to retain his spot, making changes unlikely. CSK: Sanju Samson (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, Sarfaraz Khan, Jamie Overton, Akeal Hosein, Anshul Kamboj, Noor Ahmad, Khaleel Ahmed.

Impact Player: Gurjapneet Singh

Kolkata Knight Riders will be hoping Varun Chakravarthy is fit to feature at what is effectively his second home, Chepauk. Though he hasn’t been in the best form, he has been training in recent days, even if his left hand was strapped on the eve of the match. A final call on his availability is expected after training.

Meanwhile, Matheesha Pathirana has received his NOC to link up with KKR, but he won’t be available for this fixture. KKR: Ajinkya Rahane (c), Finn Allen, Angkrish Raghuvanshi (wk), Cameron Green, Rinku Singh, Rovman Powell, Ramandeep Singh, Sunil Narine, Anukul Roy/Varun Chakravarthy, Navdeep Saini, Kartik Tyagi Impact Player: Vaibhav Arora STAT ATTACK

  • Since 2023, MS Dhoni has led Chennai Super Kings in 25 matches, while Ruturaj Gaikwad has captained in 23. Under Dhoni, spinners have bowled an average of 8.3 overs per game, compared to 6.3 under Gaikwad and have bagged twice as many wickets during Dhoni’s tenure.

  • Dewald Brevis has been an absolute smasher. In T20s since 2025, only Tim David (171.87) has a better strike-rate than Dewald Brevis (170) in overs 7-15.
