IPL 2026: MI vs PBKS - Can Mumbai Turn Things Around?

Punjab Kings are the only unbeaten team in IPL 2026.

IPL 2026: MI vs PBKS - Match Preview

Punjab Kings are the only undefeated side in IPL 2026 so far and they take on the Mumbai Indians who have lost three in a row. Shreyas Iyer has been inspirational for PBKS and he's led from the front. He's been in red-hot form with the bat and the on-field instinctive decisions have worked for him to a nicety. Punjab's top order has looked a million bucks while the Mumbai 'star-studded' batters have strangely struggled to get going. Jasprit Bumrah has been wicketless this season but the major concern for the five-time champions will be the form of the other operators.

The potency is missing and teams have resorted to seeing Bumrah off and take the other bowlers on. It seems, the tactic is working well for them. PBKS on the other hand boast the second-highest run rate (10.05) and balls-per-six ratio (8.70) in the league, trailing only RCB, and what truly sets them apart is their intent to keep attacking, refusing to ease off even when wickets tumble. This approach can backfire at times but this is the risk the Punjab Kings have decided to stick to and so far, it's working for them. Punjab have taken a liking to smashing pace this season and at the Wankhede, where the balls comes nicely on to the bat, their top 5 can prove to be quite a handful. All eyes will be on Bumrah today and like he's turned up for the men in blue countless times, he'll require to give MI that much needed impetus, again in a blue jersey. PITCH AND CONDITIONS

The average score at the Wankhede in the last five T20s is a staggering 215. The T20 World Cup game between India and England saw 499 runs being scored and a staggering 34 sixes were smashed that day. RCB scored 240 against the hosts and Mumbai only fell short by 18.

It's very evident that the bowlers are going to have an absolute workout and the ball will be flying to all corners of the park. The winning percentage for teams batting first and second is a tight 46% and 54% respectively. The pitch will stay true throughout the game and we'll witness a high scoring game, yet again.

KEY PLAYERS

JASPRIT BUMRAH

When the stakes are high Jasprit Bumrah steps up. When the team needs a 'W', Jasprit Bumrah steps up. On the very big stages, Jasprit Bumrah steps up. That's the genius of the man and MI need him now more than ever. Bumrah has gone wicketless in his last 5 IPL games - 4 this season and in the eliminator last season. And when he goes wicketless, the result, more often than not, does not favour the Mumbai Indians.

In fact the last time the speedster went wicketless for four games in succession was way back in 2014. Even back then, the ace Indian pacer didn't concede many. Bowlers hunt in pairs and the other MI bowlers haven't stepped up either. No bowler from the MI dugout features in the top 20 wicket-takers for the current season. Shardul Thakur is placed 21st with 4 wickets. The stage is set for the ultimate match winner and for the MI vs PBKS fixture, Bumrah will be the one to watch out for.

Jasprit Bumrah in 2026: Innings - 4, Overs - 15, E/R - 8.2

SHREYAS IYER

Shreyas Iyer is enjoying a standout IPL 2026 season, seamlessly evolving into a middle-order anchor and finisher for Punjab. He’s currently averaging an impressive 68.50 in the early phase of the tournament.

He heads into this game on the back of a “Player of the Match” display against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he hammered 69 off just 33 deliveries. With a striking-rate of 187.67, Iyer has added a powerful attacking edge to his naturally elegant game, making him crucial to Punjab’s plans in controlling the middle overs and finishing innings strongly. Iyer has phenomenal numbers since 2025. He's struck 741 runs at 52.92 and a strike-rate of 177.27. He's also smashed the most sixes in the league since 2025. That's top tier.

Iyer since IPL 2025: Inns - 20, Runs - 741, Avg - 52.92, S/R - 177.27, 4s/6s - 52/49

TEAM NEWS & PROBABLE XIIs

Rohit Sharma retired hurt on 19 (13) against RCB with a suspected hamstring issue and had only a light training session on Wednesday, leaving his availability for Thursday uncertain.

If he misses out, MI face a selection dilemma. Bringing in Quinton de Kock as an opener would mean dropping one of their overseas players, Sherfane Rutherford, Mitch Santner, or Trent Boult. To keep the overseas core intact, they could opt for a like-for-like replacement in domestic opener Danish Malewar. Alternatively, if MI choose to rest Boult and tweak their bowling with Ashwani Kumar, de Kock can slot into the XI.

MI: Rohit Sharma/Danish Malewar, Ryan Rickelton (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya (c), Sherfane Rutherford, Sherfane Rutherford, Naman Dhir, Mitchell Santner, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah Impact Player: Trent Boult

For PBKS, there are no injury concerns and they're likely to field the same team.

PBKS: Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh (wk), Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer (c), Nehal Wadhera, Shashank Singh, Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Arshdeep Singh Impact Player: Yuzvendra Chahal
