IPL 2026: RR vs RCB - The Battle ROYALE

RR have won three on the bounce and RCB are looking for their 3rd win a row.

IPL 2026: RR vs RCB - Match Preview

In the build-up to IPL 2026, much of the chatter around Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) centred on their valuations, ownership structures, and widely discussed ownership changes. However, within a matter of weeks, that narrative has given way to their performances on the field and the excitement both teams have generated. Their unbeaten runs have almost felt like a byproduct of that larger impact.

While Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has added a strong box-office element, Devdutt Padikkal has complemented it with elegant strokeplay and a brisk, high-intent approach at No. 3. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel have asserted control at the top, just as Rajat Patidar has impressed with his explosive six-hitting in the middle. With the ball, Nandre Burger’s pace and late movement find a parallel in Jacob Duffy’s disciplined hard-length bowling. And looming over it all is Virat Kohli, still a constant at the top, whose evolving game continues to deliver, now extending into a third consecutive season.

RCB’s title-winning run in 2025 was built largely on their dominance away from home, where they won all seven matches on the road. A year later, they enter another challenging away leg with momentum on their side, following authoritative victories at the Chinnaswamy. However, they are well aware that RR are no longer the team that repeatedly fell short in crunch moments last season. In fact, RCB themselves pulled off one such escape, successfully defending 17 runs in the final two overs in Bengaluru, thanks to Josh Hazlewood.

The most noticeable difference between the two sides lies in their middle orders. RCB’s lineup has looked formidable, with Rajat Patidar and Tim David standing out as major threats, they currently lead the tournament in six-hitting during the middle and death overs. RR, on the other hand, haven’t quite had the opportunity to showcase their middle-order strength, which can work both ways. Their top order has been so dominant, Jaiswal and Sooryavanshi have put together three consecutive fifty-plus opening partnerships, that Riyan Parag has had limited time to settle and build his innings.

Friday’s game could offer Parag the perfect chance to make an impact in front of his home crowd in Guwahati before RR return to their original base in Jaipur. Between this fixture and their homecoming, RR face three consecutive away matches that could define their season, as they continue their pursuit of a long-awaited second IPL title.

PITCH AND CONDITIONS

The average winning 1st innings total at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium since 2019 is 193 but the teams batting second have won the majority of matches - 55% of the games to be precise.

The ground averages 7 sixes per innings but with the batting power present in both the line-ups, the number is expected to be on the higher side. RCB have won their last 5 fixtures and the Rajasthan Royals also aren't far behind.

KEY PLAYERS

VAIBHAV SOORYAVANSHI

It’s almost impossible not to get swept up in the Vaibhav Sooryavanshi hype. His explosive half-century against Chennai Super Kings was thrilling in itself, but he raised the bar even higher when he took on Jasprit Bumrah, smashing him for a six off the very first delivery, and then again off the fourth. In the powerplay, he made light work of both Bumrah and Trent Boult, leaving spectators stunned yet again.

He’s now begun his innings with a boundary off the very first ball on three occasions, and has even opened with a six twice. Sooryavanshi's six-hitting numbers are insane. The teenager averages 3.5 sixes/innings, the best in the league for players who have smashed at least 30 sixes. Chris Gayle was the previous best - 2.5 sixes/innings. Vaibhav's strike-rate of 218.71 is the best for any batter in IPL with more than 300 runs. Talk about making a statement.

DEVDUTT PADIKKAL

Devdutt Padikkal has not relied on wild slogging, yet boasts an impressive strike-rate of 201.81 from just 55 balls this IPL. He has been particularly dominant against pace, especially back-of-a-length and short deliveries, areas where his strike-rate has surged from 119 (2022 and 2024) to 191 this season. His effectiveness in the middle overs has also improved significantly, with his strike-rate climbing from 121 to 158.

Friday’s contest adds another layer of intrigue, as he faces his former team, one that experimented with him in the middle order before eventually dropping him after a string of low scores. This time, however, they’ll be the ones trying to figure him out.

TEAM NEWS & PROBABLE XIIs

Josh Hazlewood is still on the road to full fitness and is unlikely to feature. Beyond that, RCB’s only real call is whether to continue with Abhinandan Singh, which appears the probable choice. If they do decide to make a change, Rasikh Dar and Mangesh Yadav present themselves as solid alternatives. Mangesh Yadav gives them the extra stability with the bat but do RCB are stacked with power-hitters already. The big question then will be who'll do the job for them with the ball? Abhinandan Singh or Rasikh Dar or Mangesh Yadav.

RCB: Virat Kohli, Phil Salt, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar (c), Tim David, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Romario Shepherd, Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jacob Duffy, Abhinandan Singh/Mangesh Yadav/Rasikh Dar

Impact Player: Suyash Sharma

The Rajasthan Royals are likely to remain unchanged and field the same XII that did against Mumbai Indians.

RR: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Riyan Parag (c), Shimron Hetmyer, Donovan Ferreira, Ravindra Jadeja, Jofra Archer, Sandeep Sharma, Nandre Burger, Tushar Deshpande

Impact Player: Ravi Bishnoi

The winner of the RR vs RCB fixture takes the top spot on the points table. There's plenty at stake and plenty that can shape the journey of these two teams in IPL 2026. Who's it going to be then? The Royals from Rajasthan or the 2025 defending champions? Comment and let us know.
