IPL 2026: CSK vs PBKS - Match Preview
When you look at the historical weight of both sides, Chennai Super Kings would naturally be seen as favourites against Punjab Kings. But current momentum tells a different story. Right now, PBKS appear to be the more settled and better-rounded unit. As Ruturaj Gaikwad pointed out ahead of the game, success at a mega auction often shapes an entire cycle, and Punjab seem to have nailed that phase going into the 2025 season.
They’ve backed that belief with performance too, beginning IPL 2026 with a win over Gujarat Titans. Cooper Connolly has slotted in seamlessly at one drop, effectively filling the gap left by Josh Inglis with a match-winning debut. What further boosts PBKS’ confidence is their recent dominance at Chepauk — victories here in 2023, 2024, and again in 2025, even after a squad overhaul. No other side has managed to consistently beat CSK at home like this in recent seasons, and a fourth straight win wouldn’t be a surprise.
On the other side, CSK enter this contest under early pressure after a disappointing start with the bat. Their relatively young batting unit, built to thrive on flatter tracks, struggled badly under tougher conditions in Guwahati. Returning home should help, with Chepauk expected to be more batting-friendly. However, that raises another concern — will their bowling attack, which drew significant attention in the pre-season, now come under scrutiny if high scores come into play?
Regardless, this fixture already feels significant for the five-time champions. Falling behind early in the season is far from ideal, especially with a high-profile clash looming soon.
CSK vs PBKS: Players to Watch Out For
Ruturaj Gaikwad (Captain, CSK)
The skipper will be eager to find his rhythm quickly after a quiet start to IPL 2026, where he managed just 6 off 11 balls against RR. That said, his form in domestic cricket leading up to the tournament was outstanding, he averaged 82 in the Ranji Trophy and struck two centuries in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
At Chepauk, Ruturaj tends to be at his best. He understands how to build an innings on this surface and is likely to adopt a more measured approach, aiming to provide stability at the top and avoid the early setbacks that hurt CSK in their opening game.
Urvil Patel (CSK)
Picked up for ₹30 lakh in the 2026 auction, Urvil Patel offers a potential X-factor for CSK, either waiting in the wings or featuring as an Impact Player. Known for his aggressive approach, he made a mark in his last IPL outing in 2025 with a quick-fire 37 off 19 balls.
If the top order falters again, Urvil could be called upon to provide momentum in the middle or at the death. A clean striker of the ball and particularly effective against pace, he serves as a valuable option to lift the scoring rate when needed.
Marcus Stoinis (PBKS)
Only eleven batters have managed to score a century against CSK in IPL history, and Marcus Stoinis is one of just two to achieve that feat at Chepauk. Batting at No. 6, he may not get enough time at the crease to replicate such a big score, but the venue should still bring back positive memories. He’ll be keen to bounce back after a duck in his opening game of the season against Gujarat Titans.
Pitch Conditions
The average winning 1st innings total at the Chepauk is 180. And, 53% of the matches here have been won by the team batting first. The IPL 2026 has seen five successful chases in the first six matches. Will the trend continue at the MA Chidambaram Stadium? Since 2019, an average of 6 sixes have been hit per innings at the venue. With more power-hitters in the game today, that number is likely to increase.
Team News & Probable XIIs
Dewald Brevis is still recovering from a side strain, and although he spent time in the nets, he was limited to throwdowns and largely focused on defense, making his return unlikely for now. In his absence, CSK’s middle order once again looks a bit fragile.
Their season opener also marked the first time CSK played without both MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina in the XI, and the upcoming match will be just the third occasion they take the field at Chepauk without Dhoni. CSK Probable XII: Sanju Samson (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Ayush Mhatre, Matt Short, Shivam Dube, Sarfaraz Khan/Prashant Veer, Kartik Sharma, Jamie Overton, Noor Ahmed, Matt Henry, Anshul Kamboj Impact Player: Khaleel Ahmed
Shreyas Iyer was hit on the wrist by a Cooper Connolly strike. The PBKS skipper looked in discomfort when the incident occured but the good news for Punjab is that Iyer will be up and roaring to take the field against the Super Kings.
PBKS Probable XII: Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh (wk), Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer (c), Marcus Stoinis, Nehal Wadhera, Shashank Singh, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Arshdeep Singh Impact Player: Yuzvendra Chahal
The head-to-head between the two sides is perfectly balanced, with 16 wins each in the IPL. However, recent trends tell a different story. Since 2022, PBKS have dominated the matchup, winning five games compared to CSK’s solitary victory. Who do you reckon will win this CSK vs PBKS fixture?
