IPL 2026: KKR vs PBKS - Match Preview
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) come into their Eden Gardens clash on completely different paths. KKR’s slide began towards the end of the 2025 season, where they lost their final two completed matches and finished eighth. That prompted a major overhaul ahead of IPL 2026, but the fresh start hasn’t yielded results yet, with the team opening their campaign with back-to-back defeats.
PBKS, on the other hand, have built steadily on their momentum from last year. After reaching the final in 2025, they retained the core of that squad, 21 players, and have begun the 2026 season strongly with two wins.
Their top order has been particularly impressive, with the top four delivering consistently. New Australian signing Cooper Connolly has settled in seamlessly at No. 3, while KKR’s high-profile Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, in a similar role is yet to make an impact. The difference is just as evident in the bowling departments. PBKS boast a fully fit squad and one of the most balanced attacks in the tournament. In contrast, KKR have been hampered by injuries, with their bowlers conceding over 220 runs in both matches so far. Their lead spinner, Varun Chakravarthy, has struggled to maintain his usual control.
PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer, returns to face his former franchise, the very team he led to the title just two seasons ago.
PITCH CONDITIONS & FORM
The average first innings score at Eden Gardens over the last two years is 190.57 runs. The scores here have ranged from a low of 81 to a high of 261, indicating a scoring pitch with some variability.
* Kolkata Knight Riders average 201.8 runs in recent 5 games batting first
* Punjab Kings average 183.8 runs in recent 5 games batting first
Since 2019, teams chasing have won 56% of the games at this venue. Win the toss and bowl first. As far as the head-to-head battle between these two teams goes, KKR are up by 21-13. The current form paints a completely different picture but this is the IPL, where uncertainty is the norm. Can KKR bounce back after starting with two losses?
KEY PLAYER BATTLES
1. Finn Allen vs Arshdeep Singh
This shapes up as the most explosive contest of the power-play. Finn Allen, arguably the most destructive T20 batter of 2026 with 760 runs at a strike-rate above 190, comes up against the early swing and control of Arshdeep Singh. Arshdeep’s ability to move the new ball could be the perfect counter to Allen’s aggressive, “see ball, hit ball” approach.
Stat Attack: Arshdeep has dismissed top-order openers 15 times in the powerplay across the last two seasons.
2. Shreyas Iyer vs Sunil Narine
Shreyas Iyer, who captained KKR to the 2024 title, understands Narine’s mystery spin better than most. Yet, Sunil Narine remains the undisputed king of Eden Gardens, holding the record for the most wickets at this venue. Who do you think will win this battle?
Iyer vs Narine in T20s: Innings - 8, Runs - 44, Avg - 44, S/R - 125.71, Dismissals -1
3. Ajinkya Rahane vs Yuzvendra Chahal
Ajinkya Rahane has been in decent ball-hitting form but he's got the leading wicket-taker up against him. Chahal is introduced in the middle-overs where run-scoring isn't as free as the powerplay but keeping the momentum on will be crucial. If Rahane can take the attack to Punjab in the power-play, see them off, Rahane vs Yuzi will be an interesting battle. Rahane vs Chahal in T20s: Innings - 9, Runs - 55, Avg - 21.5, S/R - 127.90, Dismissals - 2
TEAM NEWS & PROBABLE XIIs
Ramandeep Singh has struggled for consistency, averaging just 19.25 across 22 innings for KKR, and was dismissed for 10 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). If KKR look to make a change, they have Manish Pandey waiting in the wings. On the bowling front, Navdeep Saini and Umran Malik provide additional pace options.
KKR: Ajinkya Rahane (c), Finn Allen, Cameron Green, Angkrish Raghuvanshi (wk), Manish Pandey/Ramandeep Singh, Rinku Singh, Anukul Roy, Sunil Narine, Vaibhav Arora/Navdeep Saini/Umran Malik, Varun Chakravarthy, Blessing Muzarabani
Impact Player: Kartik Tyagi
The Punjab Kings played the same 12 in both their wins and are likely to field the same 12 for their clash against the Knights.
PBKS: Prabhsimran Singh (wk), Priyansh Arya, Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer (c), Nehal Wadhera, Shashank Singh, Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Arshdeep Singh Impact Player: Yuzvendra Chahal
